A Badge of Honor, A Symbol of Bravery

Some say that you don't choose to become a firefighter, but rather, it chooses you. For those who proudly wear the Maltese Cross – a symbol of firefighters everywhere and the ideals that guide them – firefighting is more than a profession, it is a calling. Firefighters have a deep-seated sense of service that allows them to put themselves in harm's way in the interest of others. It's a profession that tests mettle and might, for these bearers of the Maltese Cross go where others don't dare –deep into the heart of danger.

MISSION STATEMENT:
The purpose of this organization shall be to protect the lives and property of the residents of Shade - Central City, Somerset County, Pennsylvania and vicinity from injury or damage from fire or other catastrophes and to foster and promote the general welfare of the community.

Our volunteer firefighters train extensively to maximize the level of service you, our citizens, receive.

Central City Fire Department Fire Facts - 2007

The Central City Fire Department saves homeowners and businesses 20% to 100% on Fire Insurance rates.  Right now, Central City Borough has a Public Protections Rating of 5 and Shade Township has a Public Protections Rating of 5 or 9.  If there is no contract with the municipality, then the Public Protection Rating is 10, which could be as much as a 100% increase in fire insurance rates.  Ask your Agent.

The ISO Public Protection Rating establishes the fire insurance rate parameters for each municipality.  If the area has no fire protection contract, the Public Protections Rating (PPR) is 10.  This would be the most costly fire insurance, if homeowners/businesses could even find an insurance company to give them insurance.

Fire Department considerations in this rating are types of equipment, firefighter training, number of volunteers who respond to calls, water supply and 911 communication center.  Central City and Shade Township, who have hydrants, have the fire rating of 5.  Those in areas without hydrants have a 9 rating since they have the services of a Fire Department but no reliable water system.

In additions your Fire Department saved the taxpayers $3,200,000.00 in wages, in 2007 by having a VOLUNTEER Fire Department.

In 2007, we responded to 399 Fire and Medical Assist calls.

A Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, Wherever flames may rage, Give me the strength to save a life Whatever be its age.  Help me embrace a little child Before it is too late, Or save an older person from The horror of that fate.  Enable me to be alert And hear the weakest shout, And quickly and efficiently To put the fire out.  I want to fill my calling and To give the best in me, To guard my every neighbor and Protect his property.   And if according to God's will I must answer death's call, Bless with your protecting hand, My family one and all.
